In an important study published by Desert Research Institute dated December 31, 1996 studying dust suppressant effectiveness for unpaved shoulders, data confirmed that the majority of PM10 emissions from unpaved shoulders are caused by relatively few vehicles.

The study confirmed the theory that vehicle-induced dust entrainment from unpaved shoulders is due to Reynolds shear stress induced by the turbulent wake of “Dust Entraining Vehicles.” Dust Entraining Vehicles are defined as large-size vehicles with poor aerodynamics. Traffic induced turbulence events which led to significant dust entrainment were almost exclusively caused by “large” vehicles such as trucks, semis and vehicles pulling trailers, all travelling 50-65 mph.
