Fugitive Dust Problems Solved at a Mine Tailings Disposal Site Seen in the photo to the right is a muskeg-type vehicle applying Soil-Sement® to hard-to-reach areas of a tailings pond for a mine in Canada. This 400 acre site and lagoon requires both conventional vehicles and tracked units to apply a durable Soil-Sement® sealed surface which prevents dust problems during the early winter months before snow. This is a typical time for dust problems at tailings disposal sites. Winter freezing causes the tailings surface to freeze dry which then becomes a fugitive dust source. Dust is also a problem during summer months as the water in the pond evaporates or as water is drained off. Soil-Sement® has the unique ability to eliminate fugitive dust and airborne particles because it chemically bonds and seals the surface to prevent wind from lifting fines and creating dust. Depending on the site objectives, applications can be tailored to be effective for several months to one year or longer. |
